Air and water are two elements in the landscape that are inextricably linked with each other. The sea entices us with its unique color, latitudes, waves, spaces and illusions throughout its boundless and incomprehensible realm. Whereas, the sky bestows the further elements in the landscape such as the soil, houses, forests, mountains and valleys a distinctive color, tone, softness and legibility. During this master class, while appreciating the basics of colour and composition, we shall be analyzing the harmony between the sky and the sea; it’s implication on a landscape, how delicately one should paint the sky and wherein to emphasize, the diverse texture of air and clouds, the sequence of overlay layers when portraying the sky and the sea, the choice of brushes, the influence of the color of the sky on the color of water, reflections and their relationship.

Alexander is an artist who often accepts challenges as a lecturer, always in a position to educate new groups of students. A large number of them went through his studio, especially graduates of arts – making him very experienced as a master teacher. This class is intended for amateurs but also to graduate artists who will certainly improve their skills learning from the Master, raising their education to a higher level.

The culmination of the course will be a final masterpiece, which will be exhibited as a part of a group exhibition in the N2N Gallery on the graduation day!

Master Class Structure:

Homework:  Each participant has a task before the beginning of the master class – to come up with several plots of his future work on the theme “Sky and Sea – Two elements”. Coming to the lesson, the participant does not spend a lot of time thinking over ideas; you already know with what kind of idea you are going to work.

 1st stage _ Introduction & Composition Basics

Artist will explain the basics of the composition. Very quickly, linearly and schematically he will sketch on the blackboard with a marker sketches of possible landscapes, analyzing the basic laws of composition (the location of the horizon line, the golden section in the landscape, the rhythm of the spots, distances between objects, etc.).

2nd stage _ Graphic Sketching & Building a Composition

Students will apply the received information on the paper. First you will need to outline the frame on the paper in proportions to your future finished format (pre-prepared canvas). Within borders, you will make a linear sketch of your painting. At this stage, artist will guide you and will make corrections to the composition where it necessary.

3rd stage _ Color Determination within Color Sketching

After disassembling the composition linearly, students will proceed to the color sketch.

On pre-prepared primed cardboards you will replicate the frame you need (the format is the same as in the graphic sketches). Using oil paints, you consider the basic coloristic problems. The main thing here is the color and coloring of the future work.

All these three stages of training will make possible to avoid major mistakes in composition and color on the big work. By artist’s deep conviction, any work with an unsuccessful composition is doomed to failure.

4th stage _ Working with the Canvas Format

Having a clear idea about composition, format and color sketch, it’s time to work it out on a canvas format. Under a guidance of the artist the students will take all their previously learned knowledge and bring their composition to life, culminating in the final painting.
